cookies policy

Our website uses a small number of cookies to work properly and to understand how people use it. We don’t use cookies to track you across other websites or to serve you advertising. Here’s what you need to know.

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device when you visit. They help the website remember things – like your preferences or whether you’ve visited before – so it works better for you.

Cookies are not programs and they can’t carry viruses or install software. They simply store small pieces of information.

cairncompass.org.uk is built on WordPress using the Kadence theme. Like most websites, it uses a small number of cookies to function. These fall into two categories:

Essential cookies

These are necessary for the website to work. They don’t collect any personal information and cannot be switched off. They include cookies that:

  • Remember your cookie preferences
  • Keep the website secure
  • Support basic WordPress functionality

Analytics cookies

We may use simple, privacy-friendly analytics to understand how people find and use our website – for example, which pages are most visited. Where we do this, we use tools that do not track you personally or across other websites.

We do not currently use Google Analytics. If we introduce any analytics tools in future, we will update this policy and request your consent where required.

Some pages on our website may include content from third-party services – for example, an embedded community platform or a signup form. These services may set their own cookies. We have no control over these cookies and they are governed by the relevant third party’s own cookie policy.

We will always aim to let you know when third-party content is present on a page.

You can control and manage cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:

  • See what cookies have been set
  • Block cookies from specific websites
  • Block all third-party cookies
  • Delete all cookies when you close your browser

Please be aware that blocking or deleting cookies may affect how our website works for you. Essential cookies in particular are needed for the site to function correctly.

For guidance on managing cookies in your specific browser, visit aboutcookies.org or allaboutcookies.org.

We keep your information for as long as is necessary for the purpose it was collected. In practice:

  • Waiting list information – until the Growth Circle has launched and you’ve had the opportunity to join or opt out
  • Programme participant information – for the duration of your participation and up to two years afterwards, for impact reporting purposes
  • General enquiry information – for up to one year after your last contact with us

If you ask us to delete your information, we will do so promptly – unless we are required by law to retain it.

We use a small number of trusted third-party services to run our website and community. These may process your data on our behalf:

  • WordPress / Kadence WP – our website platform
  • Circle.so – our community platform (when the Growth Circle launches)

Each of these services has its own privacy policy. We choose services that take data protection seriously, but we encourage you to review their policies if you’d like to understand how they handle your data.

We do not use your data for advertising purposes and we do not allow third-party advertising on our platforms.

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct any information that is inaccurate
  • Ask us to delete your information
  • Object to or restrict how we process your information
  • Withdraw your consent at any time

To exercise any of these rights, simply email us at connect@cairncompass.org.uk. We will respond within 30 days.

If you are unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) – the UK’s data protection regulator – at ico.org.uk.

As our website and services develop, we may update this policy. We’ll always update the date at the top of the page when we do. If any changes are significant, we’ll let our community know.

This policy is governed by the laws of Scotland. Any disputes relating to this policy will be subject to the jurisdiction of the Scottish courts.

If you have any questions about this policy or about how we handle your data, please get in touch: connect@cairncompass.org.uk

We’re a small team and we’ll always do our best to respond promptly and honestly.
